Initiatives

The youth voice is one that the City of Niagara Falls holds very high in its initiatives. Each year, the Committee chooses one initiative on which to focus that will enhance the Niagara community as a whole. For the 2010-2011 term, the Committee has chosen to focus on an environmental advocacy. This initiative has been upheld for the last three consecutive terms. I

In 2006-2007, the MYAC’s presentation to City Council resulted in the removal of all plastic bags from municipal buildings. It introduced the eco-friendly bag that has gained substantial popularity within our society today.

In 2007-2008, the MYAC acted as the catalyst that initiated the plastic beverage bottle ban in all municipal facilities. This ban continues to exist and has made a huge impact on the environmental state of the City of Niagara Falls.

This year, the Environmental Advocacy committee is working with Parks and Recreation to support the movement of replacing single compartment waste bins with four-compartment receptacles in the city. This will be a key topic of interest in the Mayor’s Youth Advisory’s Committee presentation to Council on April 4. Updates from this presentation will follow ASAP.
